2018-19 Welcome Letter

We are excited that you will be joining the Francis Scott Key (FSK) community. In order to prepare you and your child and the school-year ahead, please find some key information.

First day of school:  Tuesday, September 4th

Doors Open at 8:00am-Students in Pre-K through 3 will head to the gym (enter front doors and the gym is straight ahead to the left.) Parents can stay with your students until their teacher arrives at 8:15 a.m. to take them to class. Helpful Hint: Say your goodbyes in the gym as we ask all parents to stop at the “TV in the main hallway.”

**Due to the enrollment increase in our lower grades, students in grades 4-8 will be outside until 8:15am.  If there is inclement weather or the temperature is below 32 degrees, students will be allowed to come into the main hallway and/or cafeteria before 8am**

Pickup at the end of day is at 2:55pm. Pick up for Pre-K students is at the Pre-K door classroom (by playground) and K through 1st grade is around the corner from the playground at the side door.  Teachers will not release students until an adult/older sibling is present.  All other students will be released outside.

  • Grades 2 and 3 will exit from the doors to the left of the main entrance
  • Grades 4 and 5 will enter and exit from the doors near the playground
  • 6th Grade  will enter and exit from the entrance near the bus loop entrance
  • 7/8 Grade will enter and exit from the side of the building where the road ends

Breakfast and Lunch: Baltimore City offers free breakfast and lunch to all students.  Breakfast is served in the cafeteria from 8:00-8:15am. (enter front doors and turn right make your next right the cafeteria in on your left.) Both menus can be found online at the Baltimore City Public Schools website. Children are also able to bring their own packed lunches.

Summer evening playdate for incoming Pre-K and Kindergarteners:

  • Tuesday 7/31, 6:00-7:30pm at the FSK playground
  • Thursday 8/9, 6:00-7:30pm at the FSK playground

*Note that both playdates overlap with the My Grownup & Me class (https://www.eventbrite.com/e/my-grown-up-and-me-classes-tickets-46512851190) that evening from 5:30-6:30pm.  Come for one or both events that evening!

FSK Open House: All Students, Parents, and Community members are invited to our 2nd Annual Open House on Thursday, August 30th from 6:00-8:00pm.  Families will meet their teachers, peek at their seat in the classrooms, drop off school supplies, and enjoy the cook-out!

Opening Day PTO Coffee/Meet-and-Greet: On the first day of school, the PTO and Mr. Basmajian would like to invite you for coffee and a meet-and-greet immediately following drop-off from 8:30-9:15am in the Café.

1st PTO Meeting-September 5th from 6:30-8pm-in our Weinberg Library. Find out what is happening around the school and see where you can help support your child’s new community. Childcare will be provided with a suggested donation of $5 per child for children 4 and older.

Uniforms for Pre- K through 5th-grade students are required to wear light blue (tops) and beige (skirts, jumpers, slacks or shorts).  A light blue or navy cardigans can be worn over uniform shirts as temperatures vary in the building throughout the year. Students in grades 6-8 wear dark blue tops and beige bottoms.  FSK will have a variety of uniform options for sale at the school starting in the middle of August. A more detailed uniform document will be posted on our various platforms in the coming days. Helpful Hint: Label your child’s cardigan with their name!

Checking in at the Main Office: All parents and visitors should check in at the main office.  If you are dropping off belongings, we will have the student called to the main office. If you need to move through the building, you will receive a visitors badge…please bring your ID!  We are looking at stationing an adult in the main hallway from 8:30-10:00am…stay tuned!

Communications: The online Classroom Parent system is our main, formal mode of communication at FSK.  Administrators and teachers the platform to send information to the school community or classroom-wide.  You will get info on how to sign up for Classroom Parent at the start of the school year.  In the meantime, we have an informal parent listserve called FSKParents under the yahoogroups.  Simply email fskparents-subscribe@yahoogroups.com and indicate that you have a child entering FSK and we will add you to our listserve.  Also, please be sure to follow Francis Scott Key Elementary/Middle on Facebook!

City Schools Calendar: City schools has included seven half-days into the calendar. Please take a look at the SY calendar at http://www.baltimorecityschools.org/about/calendars

Locust Point Festival:  Saturday, September 8th at Latrobe Park.   Look for more details about this event on our Facebook Page and beyond!  It’s a wonderful fun filled day where FSK hosts the kid’s games and activities table.  Have gently used toys and books you would like to donate? We can use them! Drop them off at the Open House so we can use them at the Festival.
